Welcome to our blog post on creating an Azure Synapse Analytics workspace! In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating a workspace and explore some of the features and options available.
Introduction
Azure Synapse Analytics is a powerful tool that allows you to analyze and process large amounts of data. Before we can start using it, we need to create a workspace, which serves as the central console for accessing various features and tools related to Azure Synapse Analytics.
Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace
To create a new workspace, navigate to the Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace page. If it’s your first time creating a workspace, you will see a blank page. Click on the “Create Synapse workspace” button to start the creation process.
In the Basics section, provide the necessary details such as the Azure Subscription and Resource Group. If the Synapse resource provider is not registered with your subscription, you will be prompted to register it. Once registered, you can proceed to the next step.
In the next set of configuration options, specify the name of the resource group and the workspace itself. You will also need to have an Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 account and a file system to store data. If you don’t have an account, you can easily create one within the workspace creation wizard.
Make sure to assign yourself the Storage Blob Data Contributor role on the Data Lake Storage Gen2 account to access data from it. This role is required by different Synapse features to access data from Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2.
In the Securing + Networking section, provide the administrator credentials for connecting to the SQL pools. You can also integrate data pipelines with Azure Synapse Analytics and allow them to access the SQL pools.
Additionally, you have the option to enable a Synapse-managed virtual network to ensure that the traffic between the workspace and the data sources uses the Azure internal network. This feature may have an additional cost.
Specify which IP addresses can connect to the workspace. By default, all IP addresses are allowed, but you can configure the firewall settings later to restrict access if needed.
In the Tags section, you can add any metadata tags to the workspace for better organization and management.
Review all the details in the Summary section and click on the Create button to start the creation of the workspace. Within a short time, the Azure Synapse Workspace will be created.
Accessing the Workspace
Once the workspace is created, you can access it by clicking on the Go to resource button. This will take you to the workspace dashboard page, where you can view properties, create new pools, change firewall settings, open the Synapse Studio, and perform various monitoring and administrative operations.
Conclusion
In this article, we have covered the process of creating an Azure Synapse Analytics workspace. We have explored different settings and options that are available during the creation process, such as configuring integration options, managing networking, and creating Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 accounts.
By creating a workspace, you gain access to a wide variety of tools and features that Azure Synapse Analytics offers. It serves as the central console for managing and analyzing your data efficiently.
