Exploring the Features of Azure Synapse Studio

Azure Synapse Studio is a powerful tool that allows users to administer and operate various features of Azure SQL Analytics. In this article, we will dive into the different features of Azure Synapse Studio and understand how to make the most of this tool.

Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace

Before we begin exploring Azure Synapse Studio, it is important to have an Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace set up. Once the workspace is created, we can access Azure Synapse Studio by clicking on the “Open Synapse Studio” link in the workspace.

When you first open Azure Synapse Studio, you may be greeted with the Knowledge Center, which is a collection of samples, tutorials, and other resources to help you learn and use Azure Synapse effectively.

Using Samples

The Knowledge Center offers three options for using samples immediately:

  1. Explore sample data with Spark: This option allows you to create a sample script along with a new or existing Spark pool, which can be used to query and process data.
  2. Query data with SQL: This option creates a sample script to use with a SQL On-demand pool. By default, a SQL On-demand pool is provisioned when the workspace is created.
  3. Create an external table with SQL: This option allows you to create a standard SQL pool and access data stored in external data sources.

These options provide a great starting point for exploring the capabilities of Azure Synapse Studio.

Browsing Available Samples

In addition to using samples immediately, you can also browse the available samples in Azure Synapse Studio. The samples gallery is organized into four tabs:

  1. Datasets: This tab provides access to a variety of sample datasets that you can select and create.
  2. Notebooks: Here, you can find sample notebooks that allow you to operate on Spark runtime using Jupyter-style notebooks.
  3. SQL Scripts: The SQL scripts section offers a gallery of SQL scripts that can be used with SQL On-Demand pools or SQL Standard pools.
  4. Pipelines: This tab provides templates for creating data pipelines to integrate data from various sources into Azure Synapse.

Browsing the available samples gives you a better understanding of the types of data and operations you can work with in Azure Synapse Studio.

Exploring the Studio

Azure Synapse Studio is divided into several sections, each serving a specific purpose:

  1. Dashboard: The dashboard page provides an overview of the core categories in Synapse Analytics: Ingest, Explore, Analyze, and Visualize. From here, you can create various artifacts like SQL scripts, notebooks, data flows, and data pipelines.
  2. Data: In the Data section, you can create databases, tables, and other database objects in Synapse. You can also create linked databases to access data from external repositories.
  3. Develop: The Develop section offers options to create new artifacts like SQL scripts, notebooks, and data flows.
  4. Integrate: The Integrate section allows you to create data pipelines and integrate data from various repositories. You can also browse a gallery of samples or previously created data pipelines.
  5. Monitoring: The Monitoring section provides options to monitor pipeline executions, triggers, integration runtimes, and more. You can visualize the data as a list or a Gantt chart.
  6. Tools: The Tools section includes options to manage SQL pools, Spark pools, linked services, integration runtimes, security settings, and more.

Each section of Azure Synapse Studio offers a range of tools and functionalities to help you manage and analyze your data effectively.

Conclusion

Azure Synapse Studio is a comprehensive tool that empowers users to administer and operate Azure SQL Analytics. By exploring the various features and capabilities of Azure Synapse Studio, you can leverage its full potential to manage and analyze your data efficiently.
