Exploring the SSAS Tabular Data Model in SQL Server

Welcome back to another article on SQL Server! In this post, we will delve into the SSAS Tabular Data Model and learn how to create measures and perform analyses in Excel.

If you recall from my previous article, we discussed the basics of the tabular data model and its advantages. Now, let’s take a closer look at how to define measures in our tabular model project.

To get started, open your solution and select the column that you want to define as a measure. Next, click on the summation icon on the toolbar. This will display the aggregated results at the bottom of the selected column. You also have other options such as average, minimum, maximum, count, and distinct count.

Once you have created the necessary measures, it’s time to analyze our data in Excel. Click on the Excel icon in the upper left corner of the toolbar to open your analysis in Excel. Take note of the pivot table field list, where you will find the measures we created earlier.

Now, we can use these measures in our analysis by placing the required fields in their respective places as column labels, row labels, values, and report filters. For example, you can analyze region-wise sales on a yearly basis.

If you want to apply filters to your analysis, you can use the slicer field in the report filter. In our example, we will use the English product name as a filter. You can easily apply the filter as depicted in the provided snapshot. Additionally, you can use the slider to interactively filter the data.

To enhance our analysis further, we can also insert pivot charts. These charts provide a visual representation of our data, making it easier to identify trends and patterns.

That’s all for this time! In my next post, I will provide a detailed guide on how to create hierarchies, perspectives, KPIs, and many more exciting features in the SSAS Tabular Data Model. Stay tuned!
