How to Add IP Address to Access SQL Server in Azure

As a SQL Server performance tuning expert, I always prioritize the security of my clients’ data. That’s why I have a strict rule of not accessing the client’s machine during the performance tuning process. However, there are situations where remote access becomes necessary, such as when the client is working from home and unable to access the SQL Azure database. In this article, I will guide you on how to add an IP address to access the SQL Server in Azure.

Add IP Address to Azure Portal

When you attempt to log in to your SQL Azure account and your IP address is not in the allowed IP list, a popup will appear prompting you to log in to your Azure account. Once you successfully log in, you will be presented with a popup screen where you can directly add your IP address. Let’s go through the steps:

Step 1: Log in to your SQL Azure account

Visit the SQL Azure login page and enter your credentials to log in to your account.

Step 2: Log in to your Microsoft Azure account

After logging in to your SQL Azure account, you will be redirected to the Microsoft Azure login screen. Enter your Azure account credentials to proceed.

Step 3: Add a new firewall rule

Once you have successfully logged in to your Azure account, a new firewall rule screen will appear. Here, you can add your IP address to the allowed list. This ensures that your IP address has access to the SQL database. You can also view all the IP addresses that currently have access to your SQL database on this screen. If you notice any unfamiliar IP addresses, you can remove them by clicking on the corresponding option.

It’s important to note that when you delete an IP address, the page does not automatically save the changes. You must explicitly save the changes to ensure they take effect.

By following these simple steps, you can add your IP address to access the SQL Server in Azure, even when working remotely. Prioritizing security is crucial, and taking the necessary steps to protect your data should never be taken for granted.
