As we enter a new year, it’s a great time to reflect on our goals and set resolutions for self-improvement. Just like in our personal lives, setting resolutions for SQL Server can help us enhance our skills and optimize our database performance. In this blog post, I will share three important resolutions that I have set for SQL Server in the coming year.
1. Deepening my understanding of SQL Server Performance Tuning
Performance tuning is a critical aspect of managing SQL Server databases. While I already have a good understanding of this subject, I believe there is always room for improvement. My resolution is to delve deeper into SQL Server performance tuning and become an expert in this area.
Although I have been actively involved in hands-on performance tuning for an average of 12 days each month, there are still instances where I encounter challenges and need to resort to trial and error. My goal is to eliminate this trial and error approach and be able to identify the solution immediately when faced with a problem.
I understand that performance tuning can be complex and unpredictable, but aiming for a high level of expertise will only benefit me and my clients. I am committed to continuously learning and expanding my knowledge in this focused area.
2. Advancing my understanding of Business Intelligence (BI)
While I have a decent understanding of BI concepts, including SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, PowerPivot, and SharePoint, I consider myself a beginner in this field. My resolution is to take my learning to the next level and become more proficient in BI.
To achieve this, I plan to start presenting at user group sessions and other forums on the topic of BI. By preparing for these presentations, I will be forced to deepen my knowledge and gain hands-on experience. My goal is to move beyond the basic level and become an advanced practitioner in the field of BI.
3. Embracing the new features of SQL Server 2012
Microsoft’s release of SQL Server 2012 brings exciting new features and enhancements. My resolution is to eagerly await the final product and thoroughly learn and understand its capabilities.
By pursuing my first two resolutions, I believe I will naturally cover this goal as well. I am enthusiastic about exploring the new offerings from Microsoft and staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in SQL Server.
These are my resolutions for SQL Server in the coming year. I am excited to embark on this journey of growth and improvement. As the year progresses, I will revisit this post to evaluate my progress and celebrate my successes.
Remember, just like in the comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes,” it’s important to stay committed to our resolutions even when faced with challenges. Let’s strive to make 2022 a year of SQL Server excellence!
