Resetting Window Layout in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is a powerful tool that allows database administrators and developers to manage and interact with SQL Server databases. One of the great features of SSMS is its flexibility in customizing the window layout to suit individual preferences. However, with all the customization options available, it’s not uncommon for the window layout to become disorganized or even lost.

Fortunately, SSMS leverages the Visual Studio (VS) core, which provides a way to reset the window layout and restore order to the chaos. Resetting the window layout is a simple process that can save you from the hassle of reinstalling SSMS.

To reset the window layout in SSMS, follow these steps:

  1. Open SSMS.
  2. Go to the Window menu.
  3. Select “Reset Window Layout”.

By selecting “Reset Window Layout”, SSMS will move all windows to their default positions, close any windows that are closed in the default layout, and open any windows that are open in the default layout. This effectively restores the window layout to its original settings.

Resetting the window layout can be particularly useful when you find yourself unable to locate the windows you need or when unnecessary windows are cluttering your workspace. It provides a quick and easy way to start fresh without the need for a complete reinstallation of SSMS.

So, the next time you find yourself in a window layout predicament in SSMS, remember to utilize the “Reset Window Layout” option to bring order back to your workspace.
