SQL Server Backup: Ensuring Data Safety

As a Database Administrator (DBA), one of the most crucial tasks is to ensure the backup of databases. Regardless of the size of the organization, the importance of database backup remains the same. It is a common practice for organizations to upload backups to remote locations for additional safety. This redundancy proves to be invaluable in case of a catastrophic event where proper backups are not available.

During my search for a simple backup solution for one of my clients, I came across a small-sized but feature-rich application called SQLBackupAndFTP. This practical tool, created by Pranas.NET, has impressed me with its simplicity and effectiveness. SQLBackupAndFTP is a MS SQL Server backup software that performs various tasks such as running scheduled backups, zipping the backups, storing them on a network or FTP server, removing old backups, and sending email confirmations on job success or failure.

One of the standout features of SQLBackupAndFTP is its ease of use. After installing the tool on the server, you can quickly configure all the necessary settings from a single screen. From selecting databases to scheduling jobs, everything can be done effortlessly. The tool also provides a clear overview of the backup process, allowing users to easily monitor the status of each job.

Compared to the built-in maintenance tasks available in SQL Server, SQLBackupAndFTP offers several advantages. While maintenance tasks are easy to set up for backups, SQLBackupAndFTP provides an integrated solution for encryption, FTP, and email, making it superior in every aspect. It simplifies the backup process, reducing the number of steps required compared to native SQL Server backup.

SQLBackupAndFTP is particularly useful for developers and DBAs who want a reliable backup solution without the need for extensive management. It is ideal for any SQL Server database that requires daily backups to be sent to a remote FTP server. The tool is compatible with various SQL Server versions, including SQL Server 2008 and many previous versions.

Although SQLBackupAndFTP has some limitations, such as the lack of support for differential or transaction backups and the inability to connect to another SQL Server on a LAN, the support team has informed me that an updated version without these limitations will be released soon.

In conclusion, I highly recommend SQLBackupAndFTP to all DBAs. It is a free tool that delivers on its promises and simplifies the backup process. Download your free copy of SQLBackupAndFTP here. I would love to hear your feedback and experiences with this tool.
