Understanding SQL Server 2012 Certification Path

Welcome to another blog post in our SQL Basics series. Today, we will be discussing the importance of data and information, as well as exploring the SQL Server 2012 Certification Path.

When it comes to advancing your career in the field of SQL Server, obtaining a certification can be a game-changer. Not only does it validate your skills and knowledge, but it also opens up new opportunities for job openings and career growth.

In the SQL Server 2012 certification model, there are different paths you can choose based on your area of expertise. Let’s take a closer look at the certification options available:

1. Developer Certification

The entry-level certification for developers is the Querying test (70-461). This test focuses on SQL development skills and is a great starting point for those looking to specialize in this area.

2. Administrator Certification

For those interested in SQL Server administration, the Admin certification path begins with the Administering Database test (70-462). This certification validates your skills in managing and maintaining SQL Server databases.

3. Business Intelligence Certification

Business Intelligence (BI) is a crucial aspect of SQL Server. The BI certification path starts with the Implementing Data Warehouses test (70-463), which focuses on data warehousing concepts. To advance further, you can take the Implementing Data Models & Reports (70-466) and Designing BI Solutions (70-467) tests to achieve advanced BI certifications.

It’s important to note that in the SQL Server 2012 certification model, you need to cover all the main tests within a certification track to advance to the next level. For example, passing the 70-461, 70-462, and 70-463 tests will earn you the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification.

If you want to specialize even further, there are advanced level certifications available. For developers, the Developing Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Databases (70-464) and Designing DB Solutions for SQL Server 2012 Databases (70-465) tests can lead to the SQL Dev MCSE (Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert) certification. Similarly, for BI professionals, achieving the MCSA and both advanced BI certifications will earn you the SQL BI MCSE.

Obtaining a SQL Server certification not only demonstrates your expertise but also increases your chances of being considered for job opportunities. Employers often prioritize certified professionals when shortlisting candidates.

If you’re interested in pursuing a SQL Server certification, I highly recommend getting a copy of our book, “SQL Basics.” It serves as a valuable reference and study guide for anyone looking to enhance their SQL skills and prepare for the certification exams.
