Exploring SQL Server Analysis Services

SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) is a powerful tool that allows users to analyze and visualize data in a multidimensional format. As a SQL Server professional, it is important to have a solid understanding of SSAS and its capabilities. In this blog post, we will discuss the concept of SSAS and how it can be used to enhance your data analysis skills.

My Learning Journey

Like many professionals, I had worked with Analysis Services in the early years of my career. However, as I focused more on relational database performance tuning, I lost touch with SSAS. Recently, I decided to reinforce my knowledge of SSAS and explore the new concepts that have emerged in the past few years.

To kickstart my learning journey, I took advantage of a free subscription to Pluralsight and enrolled in their Analysis Services Fundamentals course. This course provided a comprehensive overview of SSAS, starting from the basics and gradually diving into more advanced topics.

Over the course of a weekend, I dedicated several hours to watching the video lessons and completing the exercises. By the end of the weekend, I felt comfortable with the subject and re-discovered my knowledge of SSAS.

The Course Details

The Analysis Services Fundamentals course on Pluralsight is well-structured and covers all the core concepts of SSAS. What sets this course apart is its approach to teaching. Instead of starting with the traditional Bottom Up Designing methodology, the instructor, Stacia, begins with the Top Down Designing methodology.

This approach allows learners to understand the big picture before diving into the technical details. Stacia uses the AdventureWorks database for all the demonstrations and exercises, making it easy for learners to follow along and practice their skills.

The course covers various topics, including dimensional model development, cube development, calculations, database processing, and security. Each module is explained in a structured manner, starting from scratch and gradually building upon the concepts.

Future Expectations

Although the course is titled “Introduction to Analysis Services,” I found it to be quite comprehensive. Stacia hinted at the possibility of an advanced course, which I eagerly anticipate. I hope that the advanced course will maintain the same level of quality and presentation as the introductory course.

By investing time in learning SQL Server Analysis Services, you can expand your skillset and become proficient in data analysis and visualization. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced professional, understanding SSAS can greatly enhance your ability to work with data.
