Improving Performance of SQL Server Configuration Manager Console

As a SQL Server Performance Tuning enthusiast, I recently encountered an interesting situation during a consulting engagement for Comprehensive Database Performance Health Check. The client had complained about the slow performance of their Configuration Manager Console, which is a snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

After conducting a thorough analysis and following the steps of the Comprehensive Database Performance Health Check, we were only able to achieve a 10% improvement in performance. This was quite concerning, as typically we aim for around 50% improvement by the second hour of the consultation.

However, I discovered a solution that had not been tried before in this scenario – changing the Compatibility Level of the SQL Server. Upon investigation, I found that the client was running SQL Server 2016 with a compatibility level set to SQL Server 110. It became evident that this was a major contributing factor to the performance issues.

Without hesitation, I immediately changed the compatibility level to SQL Server 2016. The impact was remarkable – the performance of the Configuration Manager Console skyrocketed. The system started operating at optimal speed, and queries that were previously experiencing timeouts were now executing in a split second.

If you are currently experiencing performance issues with your Configuration Manager Console, changing the compatibility level of your SQL Server could be the solution to your problems. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to change the compatibility level:

  1. Open SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Connect to the SQL Server instance hosting the Configuration Manager Console database.
  3. Right-click on the database and select “Properties”.
  4. In the “Options” tab, locate the “Compatibility level” setting.
  5. Select the desired compatibility level (in this case, SQL Server 2016).
  6. Click “OK” to save the changes.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your Configuration Manager Console is running at its optimal performance level.

Remember, SQL Server compatibility levels play a crucial role in determining how the database engine processes queries and executes operations. It is essential to keep the compatibility level up to date with the version of SQL Server you are using to avoid any performance bottlenecks.

So, if you are facing performance issues with your Configuration Manager Console, don’t overlook the compatibility level. Give it a try and witness the significant improvement in performance.
