Improving SQL Server Performance: A Quick Quiz

Today’s blog post is inspired by a recent conversation I had with one of my customers. They asked me a very interesting question – “When should they hire me for my famous Comprehensive Database Performance Health Check?” In response, I provided them with a quick quiz to assess their SQL Server environment. I encourage you to take this quiz as well and honestly post your score in the comments section or send me an email at pinal@sqlauthority.com.

10 Quiz Questions

Please answer the following questions with a Yes or No. If you do not understand a question, simply mark it as a Yes!

  1. Does your server occasionally slow down and the root cause is unknown?
  2. Do you have more than 10 indexes on any of your tables?
  3. Is the fill factor of your server set to 0 or 100?
  4. Do you shrink your database regularly with maintenance jobs?
  5. Does your log file keep growing bigger every day and the root cause is unknown?
  6. Does your index rebuilding process take longer duration every single day?
  7. Do your customers have to wait over 5 seconds for your application screen to load?
  8. Is your application running slow after a SQL Server upgrade?
  9. Do you know the optimal value of filegrowth for your system?
  10. Do you still have a single MDF (data) file for your TempDB?

Quiz Results

If you answered Yes to 7 or more of the 10 questions above, you can definitely benefit from a Comprehensive Database Performance Health Check. If you scored 10 Yes, it is highly recommended to arrange a training session for your organization where we will discuss optimal server settings, optimal database settings, index strategies and maintenance guidance, basic algorithms to quickly identify performance bottlenecks, and optimization scripts that I use for my customers.

The entire Comprehensive Database Performance Health Check takes a maximum of 4 hours. You may wonder how we can improve performance multifold in such a short time. The answer is simple – I have worked with over 300 different customers on performance tuning issues and have encountered a wide range of scenarios. I have solutions ready to address these issues efficiently. Trust me, you want me to resolve your performance issues in the shortest period of time, so you can focus on other important tasks.
