Where is SQL Server Configuration Manager?

Question: I just installed the latest version of SQL Server and now I am not able to find SQL Server Configuration Manager. What should I do?

Answer: SQL Server Configuration Manager is no longer available as an individual program in the start menu after SQL Server 2008. This change has caused confusion for many users who were accustomed to accessing it directly. However, there is a simple solution to find and open SQL Server Configuration Manager.

Instead of searching for it in the start menu, you can use the search function or the run command in Windows to locate SQL Server Configuration Manager. Here are the steps:

  1. Go to the search bar in Windows.
  2. Type the appropriate command based on the version of SQL Server you have installed:
    • For SQL Server 2008: SQLServerManager10.msc
    • For SQL Server 2012: SQLServerManager11.msc
    • For SQL Server 2014: SQLServerManager12.msc
    • For SQL Server 2016: SQLServerManager13.msc
  3. Once you enter the command in the search bar, it will bring up SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  4. Click on it to open the configuration manager.

By following these steps, you will be able to access SQL Server Configuration Manager and make any necessary configuration changes for your SQL Server installation.

It is important to note that this change was made by Microsoft starting from SQL Server 2008. The decision to remove SQL Server Configuration Manager as a standalone program was made to streamline the SQL Server installation process and make it more integrated with the Windows operating system.

While this change may initially cause confusion for users who were used to the old way of accessing SQL Server Configuration Manager, it is important to adapt to the new method in order to effectively manage your SQL Server installation.

In conclusion, if you are unable to find SQL Server Configuration Manager after installing the latest version of SQL Server, remember to use the search function or the run command in Windows to locate and open it. By following the steps outlined above, you will be able to access SQL Server Configuration Manager and make any necessary configuration changes for your SQL Server installation.
