We are new to ClickHouse. Where do we start?

Start with one slow, expensive, or difficult analytical workload. The first conversation establishes what is happening, why it matters, and whether a ClickHouse assessment is a useful next step. You do not need a technical specification.

What is ClickHouse in plain English?

ClickHouse is a SQL database built for analyzing large amounts of data. It is often evaluated for dashboards, event analysis, and other workloads that filter or aggregate many records. The official introduction explains the analytical model.

Do we have to replace SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL?

A common approach is to keep the transactional database as the system of record and send selected data to ClickHouse for analytics. The assessment checks the ingestion path, source impact, consistency needs, and which queries are worth moving.

We already use a warehouse. Why add another database?

There needs to be a specific benefit, such as a customer-facing query workload the current setup cannot serve economically at the required speed or freshness. Compare that benefit with the extra pipeline, integration, and operating work. Sometimes the better answer is to improve the current system.

Will ClickHouse make our analytics cheaper?

That is a question to measure. Compare the same queries, concurrency, retention, freshness, and reliability. Include the full pipeline, platform, data transfer, and engineering effort. The cost framework lists the main cost categories.

Why do we need consulting if ClickHouse Cloud is managed?

A managed platform reduces infrastructure administration. Your organization still needs the workload design, source integration, schema and query choices, access model, migration validation, and team handover. Those decisions are the focus of the consulting scope.

What happens on the first call?

The intended format is a 30-minute fit conversation with an Axial SQL specialist. Discuss the problem, the current platform, the desired outcome, and the constraints. The next step may be a focused assessment, a specific technical review, or a recommendation to improve the existing setup.

What does the first paid engagement deliver?

A fit and opportunity assessment can produce a workload review, deployment outline, risks and dependencies, and a written recommendation. If a pilot is useful, its scope and acceptance criteria are defined. Deliverables, fees, and timing are agreed before the work begins.

How much does consulting cost?

The fee depends on the question, workload complexity, access needs, and agreed deliverables. You receive a scope and fee proposal before work begins. ClickHouse subscriptions, infrastructure, and third-party service charges are separate from consulting fees.

How long does implementation take?

Timing depends on data access, source-system complexity, integration work, security approvals, testing, and your rollout constraints. The proposal states the planned milestones and dependencies. A migration timeline should follow the workload review, rather than precede it.

How do you reduce migration risk?

Select a manageable analytical slice. Validate data and query outputs, test representative load, and use parallel operation where appropriate. Agree cutover conditions and a rollback path before switching consumers. See the delivery approach .

Can our existing dashboards and .NET applications stay?

Often they can, but compatibility needs checking. Review the BI connector or application client, authentication, SQL dialect, result types, and query behavior. Keep interfaces that work and change the parts needed for the selected workload.

Can we keep the data in our cloud account or on premises?

BYOC and self-managed deployments may address those requirements. Evaluate account ownership, network policy, administration, feature availability, and the operating responsibilities involved. Use the deployment comparison as a starting point.

Do we need to share production data to start?

The initial discussion can use a high-level description, rough volumes, and sanitized examples. If deeper access is needed, agree confidentiality, scope, environment, and permissions before sharing data. Do not submit credentials or sensitive records through the inquiry form.

Do you provide hands-on implementation and ongoing support?

The agreed scope can include implementation, testing, documentation, and training. Ongoing advisory work can cover planned reviews and investigations. Coverage hours, response targets, and incident responsibilities are defined in the agreement; the inquiry form is not an emergency support channel.

Are you part of ClickHouse, Inc.?

Axial SQL is a data platform consulting practice. ClickHouse, Inc. provides ClickHouse Cloud. No ClickHouse partner status or endorsement is implied, and published platform user stories are clearly identified as third-party examples.

Who will own the solution afterward?

Ownership is agreed during the engagement. Documentation, design decisions, runbooks, and knowledge-transfer sessions are included as appropriate to scope so your team can operate and change the delivered solution.

Can you work with teams in Germany and Europe?

Remote delivery is offered in English, with meeting times agreed around your team. The technical assessment can include data location, network access, retention, and operating responsibilities for review by your internal stakeholders.
